We were there: Drama in the men’s final

On Saturday evening, the atmosphere at the IMET Squash Centre in Bratislava’s Dúbravka was whipped up by unexpected twists. The men’s semifinal games were already dramatic, and the five-set final became a true sporting highlight of the CDESK Slovak Squash Championship 2023.

The winner’s cup was taken for the first time by Matej Hrnčiřík, even though it initially seemed that the championship title this year would be won by Tomáš Tóth. He was injured in the 4th set, the drama continued, and the forces were evenly matched. The final was watched from the stands on behalf of our company CDESK, which is the main partner of the event, by Martin Ondrášik as well. Why did we support the top Slovak squash event for the fourth time?  „This sport is progressive, dynamic and fast, but in Slovakia it does not have the support it deserves. We want it to function and develop here, just as it does in the Czech Republic.“ When announcing the winners, we confirmed the continuation of the cooperation, so we can already look forward to CDESK SC 2024. And it seems that squash has caught the interest of Martin and several „CDESK people“, and they are starting to take it up more. Could it be that they want to gradually work their way into the Slovak national selection? It should be added that the winner in the women’s category was the favourite Klára Kohlerová. For the third time already. The best Slovak players thus showed not only stroke technique and fitness, but also good mental resilience in fast duels.

The three-day battle for championship titles was not only dramatic this year, but also sad. People remembered a wonderful person, friend and athlete, the multiple Slovak squash champion Miroslav Celler; all the players wore jerseys with his initials throughout the national competition.
